Food is readily available, and not an illegal substance. We are incessantly bombarded by food commercials, everyday. On our way to work, we pass in front of restaurants, snacks or bakeries.
Food is constantly within reach.
Even though eating disorders affect many people, it is almost never talked about. It’s not mentioned at church, in public settings, or private conversations, as if it didn’t exist.
The difficulty of this addiction also lies in the fact that there are several types of eating disorders. We are most often familiar with anorexia, and bulimia, but know much less, or don’t recognize, overeating as an eating disorder.
So yes, we must talk about it, and see what the Bible has to say on the subject, because solutions exists!
Overeating can also be very dangerous. Being overweight has a negative impact on the body, often with dramatic consequences.
Whether it be for women, or men, food comes to compensate for a need, typically an emotional need. For example, it comes to fix, or try to fix, a childhood pain.
There can also be an unhealthy lifestyle, and we compensate for this unhealthy lifestyle by reassuring ourselves through constant eating, or chronic eating, which leads to an addiction to food.
The consequences can become very heavy. Eating disorders can be fatal.
